Tips to Get the Most from Your Massage and Prepare for Your Next One
1. Stay Hydrated
While we can't recommend the exact amount of water to drink for your specific needs, a general guideline that is used by many medical professionals is drinking half of your body weight in ounces per day. So if you weigh 200 pounds, drink 100 ounces. Be careful with drinks that contain alcohol and caffeine, as these dehydrate you more, and actually increase your water requirements. If you have trouble drinking pure water, herbal hot or iced teas are sometimes helpful for increasing intake and count towards your ounces per day.
Staying hydrated before and after a massage helps with muscle recovery to get the most benefits from your massage. Keeping hydrated between massages helps the health of muscles and therefore makes your next massage even more effective.
2. Take an Epsom Salt Bath a couple of times per week
Epsom salt baths help to replenish magnesium to your muscles, which helps to keep them loose. Keeping your muscles loose between massages makes it so we aren't starting from scratch at your next massage.
Epsom Salt Bath Recipe for Muscle Aftercare:
2 cups Epsom salts
1 cup baking soda (optional)
1-3 drops of your favorite essential oil (added to baking soda/epsom salts and then to water - optional)
warm to hot water, but not too hot
Soak for 10-20 minutes but not longer
If taking an epsom salt bath isn't practical for you, using a topical magnesium lotion or gel can be helpful to keep muscles loose.
3. Stretch & Take Breaks
We often forget that working at our desks at computers and being on our phones can happen for HOURS at a time. This is like being a professional athlete and working for hours at a time training!
Make sure to take frequent stretch breaks, especially counteracting whatever motions or body positions you are holding repetitively.
4. Don't go Too Long Between Massages
Our brains and nervous systems have something called "muscle memory."
